Roughly a third of what comes off our trucks did not need to be thrown away, and the reason it was is almost always that donating felt like more work than the curb. It usually is more work. But the difference between a couch that gets used again and one that gets buried is often a single phone call, so this page lays out which Amarillo organizations take what, which of them collect, and the condition test that decides whether an item is accepted at the door.
The condition test
Every charity applies roughly the same test, and knowing it saves a wasted trip. An item is accepted if it is clean, structurally sound, complete, and free of rips, stains, pet damage and smoke odor. It is refused if it needs repair before use, has visible water damage, or smells of anything.
Upholstered furniture is judged hardest, because of bed bug risk. Mattresses are the strictest of all and most organizations stopped accepting them entirely for that reason. If a piece would embarrass you to give to a friend, it will be refused at the door.
Organisations that take furniture
Amarillo has several established options, and it is worth calling before loading anything because acceptance and collection policies change with warehouse capacity.
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore, which typically takes furniture, appliances, building materials, cabinetry and fixtures, and often collects larger items
- Goodwill, strongest on clothing, housewares and smaller items, with furniture acceptance varying by location
- The Salvation Army, which historically operates furniture collection in many markets
- Local church and community outreach programs, often the best route for a family in immediate need
- Animal shelters, which take old towels, blankets and bedding that no other charity wants

What almost nobody takes
Being clear about this prevents a wasted afternoon. Mattresses and box springs are refused nearly everywhere. So are tube televisions, cribs and car seats that fail current safety standards, appliances that do not work, particleboard furniture that has been assembled and moved, and anything with visible pet damage.
If your item is on that list, donation is not the route. It is either a private sale to someone who wants a project, or it is disposal.
Tax deduction paperwork
Donations to a registered charity are generally deductible at fair market value, which is what the item would sell for used, not what you paid. Get a receipt at the door, photograph the item before it leaves, and keep a simple list. Above certain thresholds the IRS requires a written appraisal, which is worth checking on for a large estate donation.
This is general information rather than tax advice, and a large donation is worth ten minutes with your accountant.
How we handle donatable items
On every cleanout our crew separates anything that would pass the condition test rather than loading it with the rest, and takes it to a charity partner. It does not lower your price, because the labor is the same either way, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
What it does mean is that on an estate or garage job you do not have to make two separate arrangements. Point at what you think is worth saving, and we will make sure it goes somewhere useful rather than into the same truck bed as the broken things.
Questions people actually ask
Which charities collect furniture in Amarillo?
Habitat for Humanity ReStore and The Salvation Army commonly operate furniture collection, and local church outreach programs sometimes do. Call the specific Amarillo branch first, because collection availability depends on warehouse capacity.
Will a charity take my mattress?
Almost certainly not. Most organizations stopped accepting mattresses and box springs over bed bug risk, which is why mattress disposal is one of the most common calls we get.
What condition does donated furniture need to be in?
Clean, structurally sound, complete and free of rips, stains, pet damage and odor. If it would need repair before someone could use it, it will be refused at the door.
Do you donate items you collect?
Yes. Anything that would pass a charity's condition test is separated during the job and taken to a partner rather than loaded with the rest. It does not change your price, because the labor is the same.
